Selecting a Surgeon
Finding a qualified surgeon that you trust to perform your hair transplant
surgery is an important step.
You
can contact the American Board of Medical Specialties (www.abms.org)
to check your doctor’s certification.
Keep in mind that it is best to obtain several consultations before
choosing one doctor. Speaking with several surgeons will allow you
to compare and contrast your experiences, and ultimately make the best
choice.
If you have found a surgeon, there are some steps to follow in order
to ensure his or her qualifications:
- Begin by asking the physician for a recommendation. Most qualified
surgeons will be glad to offer you the contact information of previous
patients.
- - During your first consultation, your surgeon should discuss your
goals and expectations with you to ensure that you are realistic
about the results of the procedure.
- Your surgeon should also discuss the details of the procedure with
you, including all the benefits and risks of the surgery. You should
not
feel pressured by your surgeon in any way to go through with the
procedure.
- The surgeon should discuss the possibilities through surgery,
along with his or her expectations, the possible techniques, the limitations,
and any risks that may be involved.
- The surgeon should also have before and after photographs of previous
patients for you to review.
- The surgeon should also provide you with information concerning
the surgical facility to be used, anesthesia, and the costs associated
with the procedure.
- The surgeon should conduct a thorough medical history check,
looking for any medical conditions that can cause problems during or
after surgery.
- Prior to surgery, the doctor should provide you with specific pre-operative
instructions on how to prepare for the surgery. These may include
guidelines on eating, drinking, smoking, the avoidance of certain vitamins
and medications, and other important considerations.
Questions to ask your surgeon:
- Do you specialize in hair transplant surgery?
- How many hair transplant surgeries do you perform per year?
- How many years have you been performing hair transplant surgery?
- What is the most common complication you encounter with hair transplant
surgery and how do you address it?
- Do you have before and after photos for me to review of patients
that you have previously performed hair transplant surgery on?
- Can you provide me with the names and phone numbers of at least 6
previous patients that I can speak with?
- Has your work been documented in any leading journals? (this ensures
the surgeon’s credibility).
